What is a Living Library?
It is a methodology that allows an informal and constructive dialogue between participants and Human Books, in this case volunteers who are experts in fields of media and policy work or professionals in the field that is relevant for the context of the hackathon. The Living Library also creates the opportunity to promote an interpersonal relationship between groups that are usually not able to interact. What do you need for the Living Library:
1. Select the “Books”

Choose individuals who are experts in the relevant fields for your theme: media, policy, technology, environment… These “Human Books” volunteer to share their stories in open conversations.
2. Prepare the “Books”

Train/inform the volunteers on how to tell their stories effectively, and what to prepare for this event.
3. Set Up the Venue

Organize a comfortable space that can facilitate personal conversations between the “Books” and the “Readers.” Ensure there are private or semi-private areas for discussions to take place without disturbances and too much noise.
4. Facilitate the “Reading”

Have staff or volunteers available to manage time, help with the flow of sessions, and provide support to both “Books” and “Readers.” They can also assist with any difficulties that arise during the conversations, e.g. too many people “reading” the same Book, or having a Book without any readers.
